Dabei erweisen sich die verschiedenen Strahlen als repräsentativ für mehrere Werke anderer Dichter aus dem annus mirabilis 1922, während die folgende Rezeption des Gedichts sich als Seismograph für Messung der kritisch-theoretischen Tendenzen der nächsten Jahrzehnte erkennen läßt. Durch diese kaleidoskopartige Behandlung, die sich bei anderen Werken gut anwenden ließe, erscheint Rilkes berühmtes Sonett in einer neuen, erhellenden Beleuchtung, die über die übliche Werkanalyse weit hinausgeht. Der Autor Theodore Ziolkowski ist emeritierter Professor der Deutschen und Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft an der Princeton University.
